Kean Edges Felician, 7-6; Cougars Record Program Best 35 Wins

UNION, N.J. (5/8/07) - Pinch runner Maikel De La Rosa (Newark, N.J.) crossed the plate in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run as Kean University defeated Felician College, 7-6, Tuesday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.

With the win the Cougars improve to 35-8 overall.  Kean's 35 wins are a new program standard.  The Cougars previous season record was 34-9 during the 2004 season.

With the scored tied at 6-all in the bottom of the ninth, junior Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) led off with a single through the left side.  De La Rosa was then substituted for Mattonelli and proceeded to steal second.  After a fly out to leftfield, senior Perry Schatzow (Ocean Twp., N.J.) delivered a single to right field which plated De La Rosa for the winning run.

Earlier in the contest, Kean broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth.  With the bases loaded and one out, Mattonelli recorded an RBI walk.  Freshman Chris Carrano (Lincoln Park, N.J.) and senior Joe D'Andrea (Hamilton, N.J.) later scored on a throwing miscue.

The Golden Falcons tied things up with a three run inning of their own in the top of the eighth.  Senior Chris Flynn (Keyport, N.J.) got things going with an RBI single followed by a single by Richard Melendez (Miami, Fla.).  Later in the inning Albie Sanguilano (Flemington, N.J.) tied things up with an RBI infield single.

Reliever Brandon Aich (Sayreville, N.J.) picked up the win.  Aich (2-1) tossed two innings allowing just two hits while striking out two.  Starter Tom Paglione (Hamilton, N.J.) earned a no-decision after tossing seven plus innings allowing six runs and 11 hits.  He also walked two and fanned four.

Sophomore Anthony Spina (Toms River, N.J.) suffered the loss.  Spina allowed the winning run after tossing one and a third innings with three hits.

Offensively Schatzow was 3-for-4 with a double while Mattonelli and Mike Shymanksi (Edison, N.J.) each chipped in with two hits.
