Softball Opens Spring Break with Three
Victories
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/16/08) - The Kean University softball
team has opened up its Spring Break trip at the Rebel Spring Games
with a 3-1 record.
The Cougars (7-1) split their first two games on Saturday
against Carthage College (W, 5-4) and Mount Union College (L, 6-4),
before sweeping their games on Sunday against Loras College (W,
10-2) and Framingham State College (W, 6-1).
Sophomore designated player Allison Thibault (Garfield,
N.J.) (pictured right) has paced the Cougars, going
9-of-12 in the four games with all bunt singles. In the
opener against Carthage, Thibault was 4-of-4, while on Sunday
against Loras she was 3-of-4 with three runs scored.
Outfielder Allison Lizzi (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and
Jesse Buchanan (Washington Twp., N.J.) each added
six hits and a combined seven runs scored and seven RBI.
Junior Sara Steinman (Springfield, N.J.) drove
in a team-high six runs with five hits, while senior shortstop
Johanna Hedler (South Plainfield, N.J.) scored a
team-high six runs and added four hits.
On the mound, rookie Courtney Smyth (Abington,
Pa.) (pictured left) allowed no earned runs as she picked
up a pair of wins to improve to 4-0, while classmate Jess
Mattos (Carteret, N.J.) earned the victory against
Framingham State College against to up her record to 2-0 this year.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, March 18, when they
face Trinity College (Conn.) and Massachusetts College of Liberal
Arts.
