Softball Falls to #2 Ramapo in NJAC Playoffs, 2-0

MAHWAH, N.J. (4/30/08) - Junior first baseman Marilee Farmer (Toms River, N.J.) hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Ramapo College to a 2-0 victory over Kean University in the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference softball tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

The second-seeded Roadrunners (33-8) advance to play #4 The College of New Jersey on Friday, while the Cougars (28-13) face #6 William Paterson University in an elimination game earlier in the day on Friday.

Senior right-hander Kristen Hennings (Jackson, N.J.) pitched stellar for the second straight game against Ramapo, however was on the losing end of the 2-0 game after defeating the Roadrunners, 2-0, in the regular season finale last Saturday afternoon.

After tossing 12 straight scoreless innings against the Roadrunners, Hennings (pictured right) battled with Roadrunner senior right-hander Katie Norton (Livingston, N.J.) through five scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ramapo junior catcher Kelly Schriber (Montclair, N.J.) singled to left field with one out in the sixth inning before Farmer drove the first pitch over the left field fence.

The Cougars put the tying runs on base with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, as junior Sara Steinman (Springfield, N.J.) and senior Johanna Hedler (South Plainfield, N.J.) each singled, however Norton forced a line out to end the game.

Hennings (5-6) scattered eight hits and walked just one in the complete game.

At the plate, senior first baseman Katie Hicks (Medford Lakes, N.J.) was 3-of-3, while Steinman added a pair of hits for the Cougars.

Kean faces William Paterson on Friday, May 2, at Montclair State University Softball Stadium at 11:00 a.m.
