Late Surge Sends Muhlenberg Past

(8/31/08) - Two goals, including a penalty kick,
in the final two and a half minutes of action broke a 2-2 tie and
gave Muhlenberg their second straight win in the Cougar Classic
defeating Kean, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Kean Alumni Stadium.
In earlier game action, St. Joseph's College of Long Island
(1-1) controlled much of the game and cruised to a 3-0 victory over
Gwynedd-Mercy College (0-2).

Kean got aboard early in the match, as senior Nicole Tahan
(Clifton, N.J.) netted a pass from senior Amanda
Pitts (Rahway, N.J.) (pictured right) in the third minute
of action. The Mules tied things up before the end of the
half as freshman Renee Dessimone (Glen Rock, N.J.) scored
an unassisted goal at 38:54.
After trading goals in the second half, the possibility of
overtime drew near before the Mules were awarded a penalty kick at
87:33. Freshman Nicolette Miller (Wyomissing, Pa.)
took advantage and put Muhlenberg up for good. Just 15
seconds later, the Mules sealed the win with a goal from
Kimberly Hacker (Greenville, Del.) off an assist from
junior Christina O'Grady (Mechanicsburg, Pa.).
The Mules held a slight advantage in shots, 18-16, as well as
corner kicks, 4-2.
Both teams traded goalies after the first half, each team having
an equal combined eight saves apiece.
Kean returns to action on Wednesday, September 3rd as
they host FDU-College at Florham at 7:30 p.m.
St. Joseph's controlled much of the match in today's earlier
action. Holding a 17-3 advantage in shots, the Golden Eagles
scored quickly with an unassisted goal just 57 seconds into the
match by junior Angie Merante (Holtsville,
N.Y.). They closed out the first half with a goal
off of Megan Brady (Rocky Point, N.Y.) with an
assist from senior Pam Brandon (Massapequa,
N.Y.). St. Joseph's closed out the win with a goal
in the 56th minute from Alyssa Cote (Smithtown,
N.Y.).
