Rain Shortens Softball Doubleheader

UNION, N.J. (4/14/09) - New Jersey City University scored two runs in the sixth inning to defeat host Kean University, 2-1, in the opener of a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader, before the nightcap was called in the middle of the second inning due to rain.

The Gothic Knights improved to 14-15 overall, 4-7 in the NJAC, while the Cougars dropped to 13-16 overall, 4-7 in the conference.

GAME ONE: Sixth Inning Lifts NJCU Past Kean, 2-1

Senior right-hander Lacey Skowronski (Bayonne, N.J.) earned the complete game victory on the mound for the Gothic Knights, scattering seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Trailing 1-0, the Gothic Knights opened the top of the sixth inning up with three straight singles, the third by sophomore catcher Taylor Lang (Carteret, N.J.) to drive in junior Christina Prospero (Secaucus, N.J.) to tie the game.  Junior Tara Perrucci (Wallington, N.J.), who had a bunt single earlier in the inning and advanced to third on Lang's single, would score the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Kean took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, as junior right-hander Cassie Shotwell (Dunellen, N.J.)  had a RBI single drop behind the third baseman to score senior catcher Jesse Buchanan (Washington Twp., N.J.), who led off the inning being hit by a pitch.

The Cougars continued to threaten that inning, as sophomore Katie Yard (Hillsborough, N.J.) singled through the right side to load the bases, however Skowronski forced the ground out to get out of the jam.

Yard (pictured right) finished 2-of-3 for Kean, while five other Cougars recorded hits.

For NJCU, sophomore second baseman Danielle Delfino (Jersey City, N.J.) was 2-of-4 with a double.

The second game of the doubleheader reached the middle of the second inning before being called due to the continuing rainfall.

The Cougars and Gothic Knights will make-up that game from the beginning on Thursday, April 16, at 3 p.m.
