Baseball Sweeps Stockton, 21-2 & 8-4

Union, N.J. (4/4/09) - The Kean University baseball team scored a combined 29 runs and 30 hits to earn a sweep of visiting Richard Stockton, 21-2 and 8-4, Saturday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.

Junior Mike Moceri (Yardville, N.J.) was 5-for-7 with seven RBI and five runs scored to go along with two doubles and a triple on the afternoon in the win.

Game One

The Cougars (19-6, 5-2 NJAC) got things going from their first at-bat, plating six runs in the bottom of the first.  Moceri got started with an RBI double followed by a two RBI single off the bat of Dylan Laguna (Edison, N.J.)

KU then put the game away with a ten run sixth inning.  Senior Mike Manganiello (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) (pictured left) recorded a two run homerun while pinch-hitter Dave Zavistoski (Edison, N.J.) had a two RBI single to left center.  The Cougars recorded four ground-rule doubles in the inning.

Offensively Gabe Ramirez (North Bergen, N.J.) was 3-for-3 with two RBI while Moceri was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.  Laguna finished game one with a 4-for-4 performance and three RBI and freshman Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J.) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Junior Joe Bartlinski (South Amboy, N.J.) picked up the win.  Bartlinski (4-1) tossed six innings allowed just three hits.  He walked one and struck out two.  Senior Joe Rizzo (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned the three inning save.  Rizzo allowed two runs and three hits.

Junior Jay Wilson (Brick, N.J.) suffered the loss for the Ospreys.  Wilson allowed eight runs, five earned, in four innings of work.  He fanned three and walked two.

Game Two

After recording a combined 30 hits in game one, game two only saw 13.

The Cougars jumped on board with a single run in the first as Moceri grounded out to score Mike Diaz (Westfield, N.J.) who reached on catchers interference.  The Ospreys (12-8, 1-5 NJAC) tied things right up as Matt Allen (Salem, N.J.) scored on a Cougar miscue, after reaching on a single.

Stockton took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth as junior Matt Hunt (Medford, N.J.) hit a two-out ground-rule double.  He and Scott Fisher (Toms River, N.J.) would later score on a two RBI single by Allen.

Kean took the lead for good in the bottom of the same inning as freshman D.J. Breckenridge (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit a two RBI double to left center.   Moceri later drove him home with an RBI single.

Moceri was 2-for-3 with four RBI while Breckenridge (pictured right) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

For the Ospreys, Allen was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Senior Pedro Rivera (Elizabeth, N.J.) earned the win for the Cougars.  Rivera (3-0) (pictured left) allowed three runs, two earned, in six and two thirds innings of work.  He struck out eight and walked three.  Senior Brandon Aich (Sayreville, N.J.) earned his eighth save of the season after entering the game in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, forcing a groundout to end the game.

Hunt suffered the loss in game two.  Hunt (1-2) tossed six innings allowing seven runs, six earned, and five hits.  He walked five and struck out one.
