UNION, N.J. (3/8/11) – Sophomore Lyndsey Cannon scored six goals and senior Amanda South tied the program's all-time points record, however the Kean University women's lacrosse team fell to Western Connecticut State University, 17-14, in the season opener on Tuesday afternoon.
South (pictured left) finished with three goals, giving her 213 career points to tie the record held by Lily Luu (1997-2000).
For the Colonials (1-0), Nicole Perrone finished with six goals and one assist in the victory.
After the Cougars (0-1) scored the first goal of the game, WestConn netted five of the next six goals to take a 5-2 lead with less than 20 minutes left in the first half. Kean answered back with four straight goals to take a 6-5 lead, however the Colonials closed the half on a 5-1 run to take a 10-7 lead at halftime.
The Colonials extended the lead to 12-7 with the first two goals of the second half and would take a 15-9 lead, before the Cougars closed the game with five the last seven goals.
Cannon finished with six goals, two assists and four draw controls, while senior goalkeeper Ashlie Berghold made four saves.
WestConn goalkeeper Karli Portnoy finished with nine saves, while Devon Edwards had three goals and two assists.
Kean opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Friday, March 11, as the Cougars host The College of New Jersey at 4 p.m.
