Widener Edges Women's Lacrosse, 9-8

Union, N.J. (3/21/15) – The Kean University women's lacrosse rallied for two goals in the final minute, but fell just short by the final of 9-8 against Widener University on Saturday evening.

With the win the Pride improve to 2-3 while Kean falls to 0-4 this season.

Widener jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of action, using two free position opportunities.  The Cougars responded and tied the game up as freshman Eliza Clark found the back of the net off a pass from fellow classmate Emily Stasuk (pictured left).  Junior Jordan Blanda posted the first two goals of the game for Kean.

The Pride closed out the first half with two goals to regain the lead, holding a 5-3 advantage at the break.

The Cougars pulled within two again on three separate occasions in the second half (6-4, 8-6), the last coming with just a minute left in regulation, 9-7.  Never giving up, junior Sam Gnapp followed up her free position goal with exactly one minute to go with an unassisted goal as she sprinted down the field with 39 seconds remaining, to inch closer, 9-8.

That would be as close as Kean could get, as the Pride's Megan Capobianco pulled down the ensuing draw control and Widener chewed up what was left of the clock to walk away with the win.

Gnapp posted a team-high three goals while Blanda registered two goals and four draw controls.

For the Pride, Kelsey Powell and Meghan Garvey each tallied three goals.
