Acker Wins #400 in Softball Senior Day Split with Stockton

UNION, N.J. (4/27/17) – Head Coach Margie Acker captured the 400th victory of her career as the Kean University softball team split with Stockton University on Senior Day on Thursday. The Cougars are now 27-7 and 10-6 in the NJAC, while Stockton moves to 18-17-1 and 7-8-1 in the league.

Game One

Kean pitcher Shannon McMahon twirled her seventh shutout of the season in game one, needing just 77 pitches to get through the Stockton lineup. She carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, struck out three and allowed just two hits all game.

She got some help from her defenders: Caroline Ratti (pictured left) threw out the second batter of the game from the outfield after what looked like a sure ground-ball basehit through the right side.

There was a nice sliding catch by Dana Knapp in centerfield in the fourth, and Ratti ran down a line drive in the gap in the seventh to head off the final Stockton rally and secure the shutout.

Kean's two runs came on the same play. Samantha Krakower, Olivia Zengel and Taryn DiGiacomo all singled to load the bases for Ratti. The sophomore came through with a 2-RBI single up the middle that plated the only two runs of the game. Ratti and DiGiacomo both had two hits in the opener for Kean.

Game Two

Stockton's Alexandra Cosenzo hit two home runs early in game two help stake the Ospreys to a 5-0 lead. Pitcher Victoria Torp also did well in the contest, holding Kean to two runs and scattering 10 hits in her complete game win.

Sabo, Cayleen Rizo and Knapp all had two hits in the game for Kean, but the team had trouble stringing them together and stranded seven runners on base. Rizo and Krakower had the Cougar RBIs in the game, but Kean fell 5-2 in the nightcap.

Sabo tied Kean's all-time run record with the 136th plate crossing of her career in the sixth inning.

The Cougars will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
