Reading, Pa. (3/19/18) – The Kean University baseball rallied for four runs in the eighth and ninth innings to push past Alvernia University by the final of 7-5 on Monday afternoon.
Trailing 5-3 with one out in the eighth the Cougars (7-10) got back-to-back singles from Matt Krupa and Steve Santigate. Jimi Fitzgerald followed with a walk to load the bases. Freshman Anthony Laureano tied things up with a two RBI double.
Rookie Fernando Zayas entered the game with one out and two aboard in the bottom of the same inning and worked around the jam, stranding three while holding the tie.
John Carello put Kean ahead in the top of the ninth with a one out RBI single and Nick Polizzano added insurance with an RBI double later in the inning.
Zayas worked into and out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. A pop up and pickoff ended the threat.
Not to be lost in the action was the pitching of Jonathan Rodriguez. He tossed five innings of shutout relief allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
Offensively Chris Vetter, Frank LoGiudice, Krupa and Laureano each had two hits. Laureano and Polizzano finished with two RBI each.
Kean is slated to play Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday.
