STANDISH, Maine (9/16/18)- Melissa Way notched her second career goal as the Kean University field hockey team lost a double-overtime heartbreaker to undefeated Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Alexandra Belaire scored two goals, including the game-winner for the Monks who improve to 7-0 overall. Kayla Molnar assisted on Way's goal and tallied a game-high seven shots for the Cougars who fall to 2-5 overall.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the second half, Kean leveled everything at 1-1 in the 66th minute as Way collected a loose ball off a Molnar corner and deposited into the right corner of the net.
The Cougars continued their offensive pressure as they outshot the Monks, 20-4 over the final 20 minutes of the contest. In the 87th minute, SJC scored the golden goal when Belaire scored off an assist from Kayla Veilleux.
Kean finished the game dominating the stat sheet, including 24-6 on shots and 16-5 on penalty corners. Way finished with six shots, while Jenna Patrone totaled four and Rachel Mills tallied three.
The contest took nearly 3 ½ hours to play after one official suffered heat exhaustion in the first half. The first half was finished with just one official and the game was halted for nearly an hour as both squads waited for a replacement official.
Head Coach Leslie LaFronz and the Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18th, hosting the Bulldogs of DeSales University at 7:30 p.m.
