#11 Softball Splits Doubleheader with Bowdoin

UNION, N.J. (3/9/20) – The #11 Kean University softball team split a doubleheader with Bowdoin College on Monday afternoon.

#11 Kean 2, Bowdoin 0
Taryn DiGiacomo struck out four batters and improved to 5-0 in the circle as the Cougars (9-0) held the Polar Bears (0-1) to just four hits in the shutout victory.

Caroline Ratti finished 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk, while both Gabriella Fredette and Jenn Majorczak went 1-for-3.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first after Ratti doubled to get on and eventually scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Julie Raba.

Kean tallied their second run in the very next inning as the Cougars earned bases loaded walks for Sarah Zengel and Beth Anania, while Ratti reached base on a hit by pitch. A defensive miscue by the Bowdoin shortstop allowed Zengel to score from third during the next at-bat.

Bowdoin 7, #11 Kean 3
The Cougars (9-1) had their nine game-winning streak snapped by a five-run top of the fourth that propelled the Polar Bears (1-1) to their first victory of the season.

Raba and Hailey Sweeney went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while DiGiacomo, Zengel, Fredette and Maria Bonfanti all tallied a hit.

After Bowdoin took the early 1-0 lead, Ratti crossed the dish on a throwing error by the shortstop to knot everything at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.

Bowdoin changed the game with two swings of the bat in the fourth as an RBI single and a grand slam took the game from a 1-1 to a 6-1 game.

A second homerun in the seventh put the Polar Bears up 7-1 with the Cougars coming to bat in the seventh.

Raba and Sweeney recorded RBI singles in the seventh to get two runs back, but it wasn't enough as Kean dropped their first contest of the season.

Sweeney and Annabella Marino combined to strikeout eight batters with Sweeney taking her first loss of her career.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Tues. Mar, 10th, hosting the Cardinals of Wesleyan University for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
