Softball Closes Regular Season with Doubleheader Sweep of Ramapo on Senior Day

UNION, N.J. (5/1/21) – Paige Metz finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored over two games as the Kean University softball team closed the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Ramapo College on Senior Day.

Metz finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Gabriella Fredette went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as the Cougars (20-7, 10-7 NJAC) battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Roadrunners (7-12, 7-10 NJAC) with a walk-off in the seventh.

The game remained scoreless into the sixth when Ramapo notched two runs with an RBI single and an RBI double. Kean answered in the bottom half of the inning, when Fredette reached on a throwing error and Jenn Majorczak scored from second on the same play. Fredette would be driven in three batters later, when Metz smacked an RBI single down the right field line to even everything at 2-2.

In the seventh, Taryn DiGiacomo singled and Julie Raba bunted to get on base. After Majorczak moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Fredette hit a walk-off RBI single to score DiGiacomo from third.

DiGiacomo struck out six batters in the complete game victory.

Skylar Hengeveld and Gianna Pickens both finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored as the Cougars (21-7, 11-7 NJAC) shutout the Roadrunners (7-13, 7-11 NJAC) in the nightcap.

The Cougars opened with four runs in the second, highlighted by a Hengeveld two run homer to left field. Hengeveld tallied another RBI in the fifth with an RBI single to left center and Kean maintained a 5-0 advantage.

The Cougars added another five runs in the sixth with RBI singles from Annabella Marino and Metz. Pickens closed out the doubleheader with a three-run shot to left field that was scored by Metz and Marino.

Heather Clevenger improved to 7-2 in the circle with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action to on Friday, May 7th, hosting the Pioneers of William Paterson for an NJAC tournament doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
