Metz and Fredette Homer as Softball Sweeps Rutgers-Newark

UNION, N.J. (4/16/22) – Paige Metz and Gabriella Fredette each hit a homerun as the Kean University softball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.

Fredette finished 2-for-3 with a homerun, three runs scored and two RBI's, while Karly Messina and Sarah Zengel both went 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Eliza Filus went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Heather Clevenger earned the decision after striking out four batters in six innings pitched.

After surrendering a three run homer in the first, Kean trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the third. In the third, the Cougars took their first lead of the afternoon at 4-3 after scoring three runs on three hits, including an RBI triple from Fredette, an RBI single from Zengel and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Lauren Paulk.

Fredette added another run in the fifth when she cracked her third homerun of the season for a 5-4 lead. The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI groundout from Filus and two RBI double from Messina.

Metz finished 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored, while Fredette went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Annabella Marino went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Melody Caces went 1-for-2.

Marino struck out eight batters in the complete game victory.

Kean notched three runs in the second as Marino hit an RBI single and Metz recorded a two RBI single up the middle. Metz added another run in the fourth with a towering homerun that went over the scoreboard.  

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action in Jersey City, N.J. on Tues. Apr 19th, against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
