Union, N.J. (3/24/23) – Misericordia University edged the Kean University baseball team in the battle of the Cougars by the final of 8-7 in 12 innings on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Collin Kiernan worked a quick 1-2-3 top of the first and Kean was quick to get on the board in the bottom of the same inning as the first three batters singled to load the bases. Phil Marcantonio walked to bring in the game's first run. Tyler Provost lofted a sac fly one batter later and Kean took a quick 2-0 lead.
More of the same in the second inning as Kiernan worked a 1-2-3 top and Kean added two more in the bottom. Evan Bresnan and Christian Pellone each had RBI hits in the frame.
Misericordia scratched across an unearned run in the top of the third before Kean added three in the bottom with Gianni Marano and Caleb Rodriguez registering RBI.
Reliever Max Oliver started to settle down now and held Kean scoreless for the rest of his six innings of work (seven total).
MU kept chipping away with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and the pivotal typing run in the top of the eighth.
Misericordia scored the game winner in the 12th as Garrett McIlhenney singled to get on and moved into scoring position with a sacrifice. Derrick Vosburg brought him home with a single up the middle.
Jaiden Cioffi, who entered in the 10th inning, worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th with three strikeouts to earn the win (2-0).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Brett Hilsheimer was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a double while Bresnen was 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a double.
For MU, Vosburg was 3-for-6 with four RBI and Jason Sanfilippo was 4-for-5.
