Newark, N.J. (4/15/23) – The Kean University baseball team picked up a win and tie at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon in NJAC action.
Game One – Kean 8, Rutgers-Newark 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Phil Marcantonio quickly put Kean (19-11-1, 8-1-1 NJAC) on top in the first inning with a three run blast. He added to that in the fifth with another homer, this one a solo shot.
Kyle Adorno and Brett Hilsheimer added to the advantage with RBI doubles in the sixth and Gianni Marano closed out the scoring with a solo homer in the seventh.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Collin Kiernan picked up the win with a complete game shutout. He allowed just four singles while striking out seven and walking one.
Game Two – Kean 5, Rutgers-Newark 5 (10 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a see-saw affair sandwiched between lightning delays in the nightcap.
Marcantonio put Kean ahead 1-0 in the first with a sac fly. Rutgers-Newark answered with two runs in their first at-bat off a groundout and single.
The Cougars regained the lead in the third with a Scarlet Raiders miscue and a sac fly from Marano.
It was Rutgers-Newark's turn and they went ahead 4-3 in the same inning with two bases loaded walks.
Eric Recchia added to the advantage with an RBI double in the fifth.
Josh Jackson inched Kean closed with an RBI single in the seventh and Marano tied things up with a solo shot, his second of the day, in the top of the ninth.
The game was called after one batter in the top of the tenth after lightning and heavy rain moved in again.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Caleb Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with a run scored.
