Softball Splits on Day Two of the Spring Games

Leesburg, Fla. (3/10/24) – The Kean University softball team split in non-conference action on Sunday defeating Skidmore College, 8-1 and falling to the University of Rochester, 3-2.

Game One – Kean 8, Skidmore 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Kean jumped out on top with two runs in the first inning.  Melody Caces reached on a leadoff single and came around to score on an RBI double from Eliza Filus. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Filus scored on an RBI single from Karly Messina.

The Cougars added a single run in the third with small ball as Filus walked to start the frame.  She swiped second, moved to third on a flyout and came around to score on a groundout from Maya Thompson.

Skidmore erased the shutout in the top of the fourth with a bases loaded walk.

Kean opened up the advantage with three more in the fifth with RBI from Messina and Thompson.  The Cougars added insurance in the bottom of the sixth for what would be the final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Samantha Raymond earned her first win of the season in her first outing.  She allowed just one run and three hits and struck out nine in the complete game win.

Caces and Messina each finished with three hits with Caces scoring three times and Messina driving in three.

Game Two – Rochester 3, Kean 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Rochester got on the board first with a single run in the first on a two out, RBI single from Juliana Lyons.

The Yellow Jackets scored two more in the second as Riley Laygo doubled home two.

Bella Truelove cut the deficit to one with a two run homerun in the top of the fourth. 

UP NEXT:

The Cougars enjoy a day off and will face Ohio Wesleyan and Mount Saint Mary on Tuesday.
