Union, N.J. (2/22/25) – The Kean University pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts as the Cougars defeated Mitchell College for the second straight day, this time by the final of 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a back-and-forth affair, just like yesterday with both starting pitchers pitching effectively.
Kean (4-0) got on the board in the bottom of the first, aided by a two base pickoff miscue. Kyle Adorno singled with one out and later advanced to third on the error. Later in the inning, CJ Tomalavage doubled him home for a quick 1-0 lead.
Mitchell (0-2) took the lead in the top of the next frame with back-to-back doubles to start off the inning. Adam Vartanian singled with two outs for the go-ahead run.
The Cougars took the lead back, for good, in the bottom of the fifth all with two outs. Tyler Stone tied things up with an RBI single and it was Tomalavage again with a single of his own for a 3-2 advantage.
Kean added insurance in the seventh as Dan Reistle was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
On the mound, Jason Gilman improved to 2-0. He allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings. He walked just one and fanned 10.
Cal Chase earned the save after tossing two innings of hitless, scoreless relief. He struck out three and walked one.
Offensively Adorno and Stone each registered three hits with Adorno scoring three times. Tomalavage recorded two RBI.
