Softball Splits Fourth Day of Spring Games in Florida; Knocks Off #18 Calvin

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (3/12/25) – The Kean University softball team split their fourth day of the Spring Games in Florida.

GM 1: Carthage 5, Kean 4
  • Carthage notched five runs over the first three innings, including scoring two runs on a throwing error in the third.
  • The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the third, when Maya Thompson drove in Kylie Petak.
  • Thompson scored on the next at-bat when Alexis Hoffman hit an RBI single to second.
  • Thompson smacked a two-run homer in the seventh, which cut the lead to 5-4.
  • The Cougars had a chance to even the game later in the inning, but Colleen Downey was thrown out at home for the final out.
  • Gina Mahlik finished 3-for-4.
  • Brianna Sciulli went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Thompson finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
  • Nikki Lusnia struck out seven batters in a complete game victory.
GM 2: Kean 8, #18 Calvin 4
  • The Cougars got the runs going early in game two as Thompson and Hoffman notched RBI's in the first.
  • Petak added one in the third for a 3-0 lead.
  • After surrendering two runs in the bottom of the third, the Cougars answered with five in the top of the fourth.
  • Sam Raub, Sciulli, Andee Perseponko, Thompson all tallied RBI's as the Cougars held an 8-2 lead.
  • Calvin got back two runs, including one on a fielding error.
  • Lusnia made a relief appearance and earned the decision as the junior held the Knights to just one run over the final four innings.
  • Thompson went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and one run scored.
  • Mahlik went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
  • Sciulli tallied three runs scored and an RBI.
  • Lusnia notched her 200th strikeout at Kean.
