Hennings Pitches Softball to Split
with #17 Ramapo
UNION, N.J. (04/26/08) - Senior right-hander
Kristen Hennings (Jackson, N.J.) allowed just
three hits to lead the Cougars to a 2-0 victory over Ramapo College
in the nightcap of a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball
doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The
17th-ranked Roadrunners (32-8, 14-4 NJAC) won the
opener, 11-0, for their 13th straight victory.
The Cougars (28-12, 10-8 NJAC) clinched the fifth seed in the
upcoming NJAC tournament and will travel to second-seeded Ramapo on
Tuesday, April 29.
GAME ONE: Roadrunners Take Opener,
11-0 (boxscore)
Senior third baseman Lauren Cascino (New Windsor, N.Y.)
was 4-of-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, and sophomore
Jamie Chalkley (West Milford, N.J.) and junior Kelly
Schriber (Montclair, N.J.) each homered to lead Ramapo to an
11-0 victory in the opener.
The Roadrunners took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a
RBI double by Cascino and a two-run homerun to left-centerfield by
Schriber.
Ramapo added two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings
before plating four runs in the
top of the seventh inning to c lose out the scoring.
On the mound for Ramapo, senior Katie Norton (Livingston,
N.J.) earned the complete game shutout victory to improve to
12-3, as she allowed just five hits.
Five different Roadrunners recorded multi-hit games, including
junior designated player Amanda Sansevere (West Keansburg,
N.J.), who was 2-of-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
For the Cougars, junior left fielder Jesse Buchanan
(Washington Twp., N.J.) (pictured right) was 2-of-4, whiel
senior third baseman Kara Schultz (Clinton, N.J.)
was 1-of-2.
GAME TWO: Hennings Silences Roadrunner Bats in
Nightcap (boxscore)
After watching the Roadrunners deliver 14 hits in the opener,
senior Kristen Hennings held Ramapo to just three
hits in the nightcap for the 2-0 victory.
Hennings and Ramapo freshman pitcher Deanna Giordano
(Clifton, N.J.) engaged in a pitchers' duel through the first
six innings, allowing just a combined seven hits and no runs.
In the top of the seventh inning, Kean junior second baseman
Sara Steinman (Springfield, N.J.) doubled off the
fence in right-center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
junior Nikki Castagno (Staten Island, N.Y.).
Sophomore Allison Thibault (Garfield, N.J.)
reached on an infield single and would later steal second to put
runners on second and third with two outs. Junior Jesse
Buchanan would then reach on a Roadrunner miscue that plated both
Steinman and Thibault for the game-winning runs.
Hennings (pictured left) evened her record at 5-5 this season,
while her five strikeouts gave her 271 for her career for fourth
place in program history.
At the plate, Thibault finished 2-of-3 for the lone multi-hit
game for the Cougars, while senior Lauren Cascino was
2-of-4 for Ramapo.
Giordano (7-2) had a solid outing in the losing effort,
scattering six hits with five strikeouts for the Roadrunners.
