Camden, N.J. (4/2/22) – The Kean University baseball team got off on the right foot with a conference opening sweep of Rutgers-Camden on Saturday by the finals of 3-0 and 14-2.
Game One
Kean got all the runs they would need in the sixth inning as Kyle Adorno reached on a single. Two batters later, Philip Mahlik singled to put runners on the corners and Michael Lapczynski brought everyone home with his second homerun of the season.
Starter Collin Kiernan (6-0) tossed his second complete game shutout of the season. He allowed seven singles, four walks and struck out seven.
Offensively Mahlik was 3-for-4 while Adorno was 2-for-4.
Game Two
The Kean (19-4) bats exploded for eight runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach. The Cougars actually got on the board with a two spot in the first inning as Lapczynski drove in two with a double down the line. Kean made it 10-0 with six hits in the third frame, highlighted by a two RBI single from Caleb Rodriguez and a bases clearing triple from Mahlik.
The Cougars then coasted through the rest of the game behind another solid pitching performance from Justin Diefenbach (3-1). He allowed one earned run and three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. Gianni Marano tossed the final two innings, striking out three.
Offensively Mahlik was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Lapczynski was 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Cougars will face Moravian on Monday in a rescheduled game at 3:30 p.m.
